This traditional soup recipe is sure to warm you from the inside out, help boost your immunity, and satisfy your soul. Those may be some big promises from a simple bowl of soup, but this recipe has it all!

The first ingredient is Bone Broth! Read this article for the download on why bone broth is such a nutritious and healing super food. If you are already convinced of the wonders of homemade bone broth and already have some ready to go, read on for the recipe.

This soup is loaded with garlic and ginger, two spices that offer potent health benefits.

Garlic

This pungent herb can combat sickness, from the common cold to the flu. Garlic is rich in sulfur compounds that boost the immune system. Allicin is probably the best known of these compounds, and in addition to helping out your immune system, it can also:

  • Help regulate blood pressure
  • Help detoxify heavy metals from the body
  • Relieve sore throat and reduce upper respiratory tract infections
  • Is a good source of vitamins C and B6, as well as selenium, all powerful immune system modulators
  • Diallyl Sulfide, another sulfur compound in garlic, has strong antibiotic properties, yet preserves the healthy microbiome in the intestines
  • and much more

An important point about garlic is that these impressive health benefits are available when garlic is crushed or sliced. If you are cooking with garlic, it’s important to let it rest for 10 minutes after cutting or crushing it so the sulfur compounds have time to form. Get your garlic ready first and let it rest while you chop other veggies or prepare other ingredients before tossing the garlic in a hot pan.

Ginger

This nutritional powerhouse has a long and rich history of treating digestive issues, reducing inflammation and more:

  • Fights fungal infections
  • Relieves joint and muscle pain, due to its anti-inflammatory properties
  • Improves digestion
  • May help inhibit cancer growth
  • Is a good source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, vitamin c and more

Combine these two ingredients in a delicious hot soup to help prevent colds, flu and sinus infections, and reduce excess mucus.

Here’s how.

Traditional Healing Soup Recipe

  • 4 green onions, finely sliced
  • 2 inch piece of peeled and grated or thinly sliced root ginger
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or lard
  • 6 cups of chicken, turkey or beef bone broth
  • 1 finely diced medium-hot chili pepper or 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Method:

  • Heat the butter or lard in a large, heavy-bottom pot.
  • Place the onions, garlic, and ginger in the butter and gently saute on medium heat for 2 minutes.
  • Add bone broth and bring the soup to the boil.
  • Reduce heat to gently simmer until all the ingredients are softened.
  • Add the chopped chili pepper or pepper flakes and simmer for 5 minutes before serving with warm, crusty bread
Variations

If you are not a fan of spicy, leave out the chili pepper and add sprinkle in some cinnamon instead for other health benefits. For a heartier soup, add carrots, sweet potato and/or butternut squash to the pot. Allow them to simmer until softened and then puree the soup. Top with a dollop of sour cream.

To turn the cold-fighting benefits of this soup into a full meal, add sliced mushrooms, shredded kale, and cubed organic chicken into the pot. Add wild rice, organic pasta bow-ties or quinoa to the soup for an extra hearty feast.
